Sources: Rajon Rondo agrees to one-year deal with Pelicans

A former Wildcat is on the move in NBA free agency and will join a group of former Wildcats at his new destination.

Shams Charania of The Vertical is reporting that free-agent guard Rajon Rondo has agreed to a one-year deal with the New Orleans Pelicans. Rondo met twice with the Pelicans. The first meeting occurred on Thursday and the second this morning in Atlanta.

Rondo spent two years at the University of Kenucky under Coach Tubby Smith. Rondo will bring a championship pedigree to the Pelicans, which is a team that is beginning to look like a playoff contender.

The four-time NBA All-Star last played for the Chicago Bulls last season, averaging 7.8 points, 6.7 assists, and 5.1 rebounds. Rondo led the Bulls to a 2-0 series lead vs. the Boston Celtics before a broken thumb ended his season, and the Bulls upset bid.

Rondo will have a lot of UK family with former Wildcats Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins in New Orleans. Just last week, a report surfaced that the Pelicans and former Wildcat Darius Miller had reached an agreement and former UK guard James Young is a member of the Pelicans summer roster.

The real question is how does Rondo fit with a club like New Orleans, who already re-signed point guard Jrue Holiday during free agency. Rondo could start or be a reserve guard alongside Holiday. Regardless, Kentucky fans will have a new team to cheer for this season.
