Sean Hjelle Selected by San Francisco with 45th Overall Pick
Sean Hjelle was the first Kentucky player to be selected in the 2018 MLB Draft. The San Francisco Giants selected the right-handed pitcher in the second round with the 45th overall pick.
Hjelle, a 6-foot-11 junior from Bear Lake, Minnesota was the ace of the Wildcats staff the last two seasons. He was the 2017 SEC Pitcher of the Year after going 7-1 in conference play with a 1.90 ERA in 10 starts.
As a junior, Hjelle went 7-5 with a 3.44 earned run average. He started a total of 14 games and tallied 91 strikeouts while only walking 22 hitters in 99.1 innings.
In addition to being named the 2017 SEC Pitcher of the Year, Hjelle collected multiple All-American honors and was named First Team All-SEC in 2017.
