Penny Hardaway Says Memphis is Going to Win the National Championship

Penny Hardaway

Memphis coach Penny Hardaway is confident in his 2019-2020 basketball team. So confident that he says the Tigers will win a national championship.

Dana O’ Neil of The Athletic put together a story with Hardaway about the upcoming Memphis basketball season and the head coach had the following to say.

“What do I know,” said Hardaway. “I know when I have something special. When I see this group in action, see their abilities, I know what’s at stake and I know what’s out there.

The teams like Michigan State, Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, all the usual suspects. I’ve studied the film. I know who they are, but when I look at this group, I just say to myself, ‘We’re going to win a national championship.’ That’s what I know.”

The Tigers won 22 games in Hardaway’s first season in Memphis but they did bring in the best recruiting class since John Calipari left for Memphis adger the 2009 season. Memphis beat out Kentucky for five-star freshman James Wiseman and flipped four-star forward D.J. Jeffries. That said, no coach ever says their team is going to win a national championship.

How much would you love to see Kentucky and Memphis matchup in the NCAA tournament?
