No. 4 Kansas is Perfect Evaluation for Young Wildcats

John Calipari has not been shy when discussing how far his team has to go before they reach a level ready to compete with the best teams in the country. Those comments, coupled with frustration shown by the UK coach at times the last few weeks, have Wildcat fans anxious heading into tonight’s matchup with No. 4 Kansas in Chicago.

Fans are accustomed to young, inexperienced teams during Calipari’s tenure, however, that statement is more valid this year than at any point since 2009. Sophomore Wenyen Gabriel is the only player that played significant minutes in the Champions Classic last season, a 69-48 victory vs. Michigan State.

Despite the youth on past teams, you had an idea of who would be the go-to guy in tight games. Early in this season, the question that remains to be answered is whom will the Wildcats turn to when they are in a pinch, needing a bucket late in games.

You knew John Wall, Brandon Knight, Aaron Harrison, Tyler Ulis, and Malik Monk had the mentality to take and make shots when their number was called. An early guess for that guy on this team would be Kevin Knox, who knocked down two big threes late in wins vs. Utah Valley and Vermont. The next name would have to be Quade Green, who has played with a sense of calmness early on.

His team may be young and inexperienced but Calipari has a roster loaded with talent. The UK coach has said multiple times that he would take talent over experience every time.

Not knowing what to expect entering a tough, early season test with the Jayhawks, fans are concerned the Wildcats will get blown out of the United Center. Regardless, this is what Calipari’s young Cats need early on this season. At times, they may have the look of a deer in headlights or decisions they make may be puzzling, but the truth is, they have the talent to compete with anyone.

The forty minutes of basketball on Tuesday night will be a great checkpoint for Kentucky. Calipari will get a chance to assess where this team is vs. a top-five team on a neutral floor in November. When watching the game, keep in mind that he has warned of a bumpy ride but to stay the course with this team. Push the pause button on judging this team, at least wait until February.

Win or lose, the Wildcats get a chance on the brightest stage to show where they are early on. My advice, buckle up and enjoy the ride.
