Fans can officially say goodbye to the RPI rankings in college basketball because the NCAA has developed a new ranking system to replace it.

On Wednesday, the NCAA announced the new evaluation tool known as NET, which relies on game results, strength of schedule, scoring margin, game location, net offensive and defensive efficiency, along with the quality of a teams wins and losses.

The goal is to create a system that ranks teams fairly and as accurately as possible. Senior vice president of basketball for the NCAA, Dan Gavitt, released the following quote.

“What has been developed is a contemporary method of looking at teams analytically, using results-based and predictive metrics that will assist the Men’s-Basketball Committee as it reviews games throughout the season. While no perfect ranking exist, using the results of past tournaments will help ensure that the rankings are built on an objective source of truth.”
