In-State Star KyKy Tandy Shared what he is Looking for in a Head Coach

University Heights guard Dekeyvan (KyKy) Tandy continues to turn heads after an impressive weekend at the Under Armour Association in Dallas, Texas.

Tandy plays for Team Thad on the UAA circuit and he put on a show during the first evaluation period of the spring, averaging 16.2 points per game. The 6-foot-1 Hopkinsville, Ky., native has plenty of schools competing for his talents, but there’s one school missing from his list of offers. He has already unofficially visited campus and John Calipari watched him drop 33 points in a regional final win, but still no offer from Kentucky.

Tandy’s high school coach, Grant Shouse, spoke with Go Big Blue Country on Friday and he explained that Tandy didn’t receive a visit from Kentucky during the spring recruiting period. Shouse also believes that Calipari was focused on sealing the deal with his 2018 class, adding that Tandy isn’t an option for a reclassification like other guards the UK coach is evaluating.

Over the weekend, Pat Lawless of Prep Circuit caught up with Tandy, who offered some insight into his recruitment and who is recruiting him the hardest.

“Iowa State, Tennessee, Cincinnati, Oklahoma, and Kansas State have been reaching out to me the most,” said Tandy during the interview with Prep Circuit. Tandy also told Lawless that he has a lot of respect for Tennessee coach Rick Barnes.

Tandy averaged over 30 points per game during his junior season and just recently made a significant jump in the Rivals 2019 player rankings. He was ranked 116th overall in the 2019 class but jumped 33 spots to No. 83 overall when the rankings were updated last week. If he continues to play well, that number will likely climb.

If Calipari wants to make a run at the in-state star, he will have to offer before the summer circuit is complete. Tandy told Lawless that he plans to cut his list when the AAU season comes to a close.

Calipari and his staff were in Dallas over the weekend for the Nike EYBL, but the UK coach did move over to the UAA on Saturday. Courtside Films posted a video that showed Calipari in attendance to watch 2020 five-star R.J. Hampton. There was no update on if anyone from Kentucky watched Tandy. That said, they will get another chance in Indianapolis this Saturday as the EYBL and UAA will both be in town.

As for what Tandy is looking for when he finally makes his decision, he told Prep Circuit the following.

“A coach that really keeps in touch with me, really cares for me and makes me feel comfortable. I want to be comfortable and make it feel like home.”
