Kentucky Does the NBA Better than Anyone and the Stats Back it Up

Karl-Anthony Towns posted a career and franchise high 56 points for the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night.

The former Kentucky Wildcat knocked down 19-of-32 shot attempts, including 6-of-8 from three-point range. Additionally, Towns grabbed 15 rebounds to record the 63rd double-double of his young career.

Towns big night sparked a great conversation on Twitter about players during the John Calipari era that have recorded 50-points or more in a single game. The results are insane and go to show the amount of talent that spent time in Lexington over the last nine years.

Scott Charlton posted the following tweet, which includes five former Wildcats during the Calipari era that have eclipsed 50-points in a single game. The five players with career nights are Devin Booker (70 points), Anthony Davis (59 points), DeMarcus Cousins (56 points), Karl-Anthony Towns (56 points), and John Wall (52 points).

Towns is also just the third player in NBA history to record 55+ points and 15+ rebounds in a single game before the age of 22. Joining him on that list is Anthony Davis and Rick Barry. Pretty remarkable achievement.

I’m still blown away by Booker’s 70 point night vs. the Suns last season. It’s even more amazing that Booker and KAT played on the same UK team (2014-2015), as well as Wall and Cousins (2009-2010). Makes you really feel like there should be more than one national championship banner from the last decade but that also goes to show just how difficult it is to win one.
