John Calipari Discusses Protocol for Summer Workouts on Campus

Last Friday, the SEC announced it would allow student-athletes to return to campus for voluntary workouts beginning June 8.

While the SEC approved the date to return, individual institutions are required to work with state and local governments to determine a time to return.

On Monday’s “Coffee with Cal” session, John Calipari discussed the 2020-21 Kentucky Wildcats arriving on campus this summer and what the protocol will be.

“They just cleared us to come back on June 8,” Calipari said. “But the protocol would be the medical stuff for three days before we do anything and conditioning without any of us coaches for two weeks.”

The UK coach is confident the setup on campus will be ideal for keeping his players safe and healthy while there. The Joe Craft Center is a short walk across the parking lot from the Wildcat Coal Lodge, which houses the players.

“Practice facility, our lodge, where just our kids live, each in their own room, we’d be in a pretty good bubble. We have a great hospital there if anything were to happen, probably better for them than having to go to an emergency room. We’ve got a nationally renowned hospital that’s one of the best in the world right there. But I still have to talk to the parents and let them know. We’re going to test when they came back. We’re going to know where things are.”

Calipari admits he doesn’t know what the future holds, but he is ready for his players to be together on campus.

“The reality of it is, I kind of want them back, but just be together. None of us know a month from now how it may change for the better. We just don’t know.”
