John Calipari is Happy for Former Wildcat Tai Wynyard

Former Kentucky forward Tai Wynyard announced his commitment to Santa Clara on Friday.

A native of New Zealand, Wynyard played sparingly during his time at Kentucky. He arrived at Kentucky in December 2015 as a midyear enrollee and redshirted during the second half of the season. Wynyard played in just 23 games during his Kentucky career, scoring a total of 19 points and grabbing 27 rebounds in 97 minutes of play.

During his sophomore season, he spent most of his time away from the floor. A back injury kept him out of action for most of the season before he was suspended in January for an off the court incident.

On Saturday, Kentucky head coach John Calipari released a statement about Wynyard’s decision to transfer to Santa Clara, where he will play for Herb Sendek. The Santa Clara coach has a Kentucky connection, as he was an assistant coach under Rick Pitino during the 90’s.

“I’m happy Tai Wynyard decided on Santa Clara,” said Calipari on social media. “Coach Herb Sendek is a friend from Pittsburgh. He was an assistant at Kentucky in the 90’s. I’m looking forward to watching and rooting for them.”
