John Calipari Liking his Team in June Scares Bruce Pearl
The fourteen league coaches fielded questions from the media on the SEC Men’s Basketball Summer Teleconference on Thursday.
The SEC is fresh off a season where a record eight league teams made it to the NCAA tournament. All coaches that spoke on Thursday believe the league will be even better this season, especially with the expected improvement of LSU, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt.

Even though the SEC will likely have it’s brand all over the college basketball again next season, everyone knows the path to a league title will still run through Lexington, Kentucky. Auburn coach Bruce Pearl is already picking up on signals from John Calipari that the Wildcats will be loaded.
“John likes his team and he likes them in June,” said Pearl. “That’s scary for the rest of us. He usually doesn’t start liking them until March.”
The Wildcats held their first official practice of the summer on Wednesday and Calipari left liking his team. Pearl is right, Calipari falling in love with his team in June is scary for the rest of the league.
Last season, Calipari pumped the brakes on his squad in October by telling media that the team would struggle. I doubt we hear that statement this time around. Kentucky is loaded and they will have a great shot at bringing title number nine to Lexington.
