42 years ago, Jack Givens Scored 41 Points vs Duke in the Title Game

On this day 42 years ago, the Kentucky Wildcats defeated Duke in the NCAA title game to claim their fifth NCAA championship and first in 20 years.

March 27, 1978, will forever be known as the night the “Goose” got loose in St. Louis.

Jack “Goose” Givens led the charge for Kentucky, scoring 41 points to lead the Wildcats to a 74-68 victory at the Checkerdome. Givens was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament after knocking down 18-of-27 shot attempts.

 

Joe B. Hall became the second coach in program history to win a national championship. The Wildcats defeated Florida State, Miami (Ohio), Michigan State, Arkansas and Duke on their path to a fifth NCAA crown.
