John Calipari’s success in the NBA draft is unmatched.
The amount of talent that has rolled through Lexington since 2009 is unbelievable, but critics like to point out that Calipari only has one title. It’s alright to compare him to Coach K or other coaches in college basketball, but a comparison to Nick Saban doesn’t make sense.
Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! Sports compared Calipari’s time at Kentucky to Saban’s reign at Alabama. Both have coached the same number of first round picks (26) but Alabama holds a 5-1 lead in national championships.

The comparison doesn’t make sense because Saban keeps players for 3-4 years while Calipari is lucky to have a five-star player stick around for two seasons. Saban’s five-star recruits have to stick around for at least three years.
The following tweet from Calipari is clearly a reaction from being compared to Saban and Alabama. Wetzel is a really good writer but he’s off on this one.
Could you imagine if we could keep kids for three years what this program would look like? Oh my gosh! But I’m always happy for the kids when they reach their dreams.
