Grand Canyon University fired head basketball coach Dan Majerle Thursday, in the midst of the cancellations of the NCAA Tournament.
While the college basketball world was in shock over the news, Grand Canyon decided it was the perfect day to fire their head coach?
The program moved to Division I a few years back and they have one of the best home environments in college basketball.
As for their next head coach, could we see Rick Pitino return to college basketball? Sam Vecenie of The Athletic has heard Pitino’s name mentioned as a possible fit.
Here is what Pitino said after playing at Grand Canyon in 2016.
“You got something special here, really special. When you have this type of enthusiasm — it made us a much better team tonight. Whether we go to Duke, Kentucky, nothing was as tough as that environment tonight,” Pitino said.
The name Rick Pitino has been floated throughout the coaching industry as a fit at Grand Canyon for a lot of reasons, and I think it makes sense. Program looking to make a huge splash in CBB, and unlikely Pitino could get a high-major right now. We’ll see where they go.

Rick Pitino was extremely complimentary of the Lopes in 2016 when Louisville went into GCU and narrowly won 79-70.
Would be an interesting fit. https://t.co/1SzlwXr5sw pic.twitter.com/rq6BsO15fq
