John Calipari: PJ’s Decision to Come Back was Life Changing

LEXINGTON, Ky – Kentucky sophomore forward PJ Washington continued his stellar play in the Wildcats 80-53 victory vs. Auburn at Rupp Arena on Saturday.

The 6-foot-7 forward led all scorers with 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including a career high five three pointers.

The 24-point effort is Washington’s 8th game of 20 or more points in the last 10 games. In that stretch, he is averaging 21 points per game and as a result, has put himself in contention for SEC Player of the Year and possibly National Player of the Year consideration.

Less than a year ago, fans weren’t sure they would see Washington in a UK jersey for his sophomore season. However, he realized the value in returning for an additional season of college basketball.

“This is a great lesson,” said John Calipari. “PJ, without going through this, having to go in that league, maybe be a second-rounder, play in the G-league, his life just changed now because he decided to come back, when other kids all left. He made a choice for him. Kind of like what Willie Cauley-Stein did; I’m coming back, because I need to come back.

The ego of this sometimes forces kids out early; if he leaves, I’m leaving. Well what does that have to do with anything for you if I had a chance to coach three and four years, I would absolutely love it. I would love it.”

At the end of the day, every player is on their own time table but it is encouraging to see a talented player return and improve. It won’t completely change the national narrative, but Washington is the perfect example that not only two years at Kentucky but being a two-year college basketball player doesn’t result in failure.

Washington is now shooting a team high 43.9 percent from three-point range this season, a significant improvement from 23.8 percent his freshman season. Washington, who attempted a total of 21 three’s last season, has knocked down 30 already this year.

Kentucky improves to 23-4 on the season and moves into a three-way tie for first place in the SEC after Tennessee’s double overtime loss at LSU.
